CAP KENYA
SMALL GRANTS AND INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING PROGRAM

Print Version (PDF)

Kenyan civil society organizations play a significant role in delivering services to citizens. In addition, they are advocates on behalf of the disadvantaged and vulnerable and inform the policy debate around issues of national concern.

The Kenya Small Grants and Institutional Strengthening Program-CAP Kenya-supports the capacity of Kenyan civil society organizations to provide high-quality services to their clients. CAP Kenya is funded by USAID/Kenya under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and each organization participating with CAP Kenya implements a project related to HIV/AIDS in one of five PEPFAR priority areas.

Because the program focuses on improving the institutional capacities of organizations, the methodologies used to provide technical assistance may be easily applied to organizations working in areas other than HIV/AIDS.

CAP's team of Kenyan experts delivers technical assistance by:
  • Guiding organizations through the grant proposal process
  • Facilitating a comprehensive institutional self assessment for all grantee organizations
  • Providing grant funding alongside institutional capacity-building tools that are tailored to each grantee organization based on the institutional needs identified during the organization's self-assessment.
CAP Kenya manages a portfolio of 20 grants to organizations that range in scale from community-based organizations to international NGOs. In order to promote networking and information exchange among grantees, participants have formed three communities of practice:
  • Facility-based care and support services
  • Community-based care and support services
  • Other HIV/AIDS activities
CAP Kenya actively promotes linkages between our grantees and government agencies to ensure cooperation between civil society and government as well as organizational adherence to regulations and guidelines at the local level.

Accountability is the cornerstone of all CAP Kenya programmatic activities. Grantees abide by a strict set of guidelines covering all aspects of their programs. This high level of accountability has made CAP the standard bearer for all programs of this type in Kenya.
